Balinski, Steven: 1918 WWI draft
Stephan F Balinski registered for the draft while working for T.A. Gillespie Company in Morgan, NJ. He listed his father, John Balainksi as his NOK; both were living at 390 Stanford Street, Perth Amboy, NJ. As an interesting piece of history, at 7:30 p.m. on October 4, 1918 three months after his registration, there was an explostion at the Shell Loading Plant operated by the T.A. Gillespie Company. The accident is sometimes called the Morgan Depot Explosion. The initial explosion triggered a fire and subsequent series of explosions which continued for three days. The facility, said to be one of the largest in the world at the time, was destroyed along with more than 300 buildings forcing reconstruction of South Amboy and Sayreville.

Battle of Hampton Roads by Ossian DD. Gorman
Battle of Hampton Roads by Ossian DD. Gorman
mlgorman_1 originally shared this on 26 Feb 2014:

"From March 8-9 [1862], a battle took place off shore from Hampton Roads, VA, between the Monitor and the Merrimack, also known as the Battle of the Ironclads. My third-great Uncle Ossian D. Gorman witnessed this battle and wrote the included poem about that event. In the last two lines of the poem, it reads, "The crew is brave, the banner bright, That ruled the day with Hutter died." That Hutter refers to William Christopher Hutter, a young Virginian who enlisted in the Southern Navy and was aboard the Raleigh, a southern iron-hulled tender ship. While going to the Congress, a Yankee vessel, young William was shot and killed from shore fire. All the details of that battle are contained within Ossian's poem. I found this poem on the Internet and copied it word-for-word."
