BI GEORGE ROSS
New York—Many embittered souls moan that the telephone is
civilization’s bane, but to Sherman Amsden, picking up the receiver
and answering the phone has meant a sizable personal fortune,
For Amsden is the creator of a utility known as Telephone Answering Service which answers about a million calls a year. He claims that among his clients, every business in town is represented. He answers calls utter business hours and when clients are out for lunch or any other purpose that demands their presence elsewhere. Doctors yield his greatest patronage, for he takes their calls before and after visiting hours. He also answers the calls for various emergencies. Owners of ailing refrigerators, for example, usually get him when they put through an SOS end he sends the repair man over. And similarly, should the building elevator get stuck between floors after ordinary hours, a call to Mr. Amsden’s Service brings a repairman right over to bring the stranded passengers up or down, as the ease may be. A million calls a year is not “hay,” as they put it around the Rialto, and Mr.Amsden has thrived by merely deciding that the telephone is a useful instrument to answer when it rings.
