    TOMPKINS -- Humphrey Tompkins, a sailor boy, came from England and settled in Virginia. In 1677 the names of vestrymen in Albemarle Co., Va. were William. Tompkins and Humphrey Tompkins. Humphrey married Emily Eubanks.

    Giles, born 22 Jan. 1766 in Virginia, married 1795 Rhoda Thurman, born 1 Apr. 1844. He moved from Virginia to Oglethorpe Co., Ga. and then to Putnam Co., Ga., being among the first white settlers. He owned three Negroes and built a log cabin in the woods near Rock Eagle, which is still in Tompkins district. Tompkins Inn was built by Giles in 1808. He married Sara Adams second.

    Giles Tompkins was a soldier in the patriot army during the revolutionary war, and migrated from Virginia to Georgia, and settled in Oglethorpe Co. the latter part of the 1700’s.

    Nicholas, born 17 Jan. 1796 in Oglethorpe Co., Ga., died 12 Aug. 1860 near Franklin, Ga. He had moved to Putnam Co. and then to Troup Co. about 1830, and settled on land now within the bounds of Heard Co. He served during the Seminole. War, holding a commission as major. He also served as a soldier in the war with Mexico. He married first Catherine Griffin Leverett, daughter of Thomas Leverett, a Baptist minister, and Mary Griffin, born 23 July 1794, died 10 May 1836 near Franklin, Ga.; he married second Lucinda Baxter Springer of Rotherwood, Carroll Co., Ga. born 6 Aug. 1825 and died near Franklin, Ga. 16 July 1887.

    Children of Nicholas Tompkins and Catherine Griffin Leverett: Giles S., born 12 Aug. 1817, married Amanda West of Troup Co., Ga. and settled in Franklin, Ga., where he died 9 July 1849; Maria Ann, born 3 June 1819, died 17 June 1898 in Newnan, Ga. married 27 Dec. 1836 Lucius Horace Featherston, born 9 June 1816, died 4 Jan, 1866 in Newnan, Ga.; Mary Ellen married Irby H. Scott of Putnam Co., Ga. who served in Co. H, 5th Ga. Inf CSA; Sarah married Beverly D. Thomasson and moved to Arkansas; Catherine Griffin married 8 Jan. 1830 Dr. Joseph Middleton Lane of Franklin, Ga., born 13 May 1823, died 3 Feb. 1882; Emi1y Eubanks, born 5 July 1829, died 3 Mar. 1914 in Newnan, Ga., married 22 Nov. 1846 Benjamin Harvey Wright, born 7 Feb. 1819, died 28 Apr. 1903 in Newnan, Ga.

    Nicholas Tompkins and Lucinda Baxter Springer had the following children: William Green Springer married Salley Jackson; John (9 Aug. 1849/30 June 1853); Humphrey A. (9 Mar. 1857/28 Jan. 1936) married first Viola Monk (28 Feb. 1858/l7 Sept. 1905), married second Mary Satterwhite; Nicholas moved to Texas; Elisa Baxter married Judge ___Russell; Ben Hill (12 June 1860/2 Apr. 1911), married Montezuma Holiday (1 Nov. 1660/0ct. 1917).
