Fred Tiers, School Janitor, Is Dead
    Succumbs After Operation
    Funeral Services Tomorrow Afternoon
The many friends of Fred Tiers will be grieved to learn that he passed away at the Paterson General hospital at 12.20 a.m., yesterday. He had been taken to the hospital a week ago undergoing an operation. His physician diagnosed his death as a stroke.
Fred Tiers was born in Paterson in 1868. He worked most of his early life at Cooke's, known later as the American Locomotive company. For the last fifteen years, however he was janitor of school No. 11 and the Central high school, serving as chief janitor at the former school where he was highly complimented by a high school official as having "the neatest kept school, or as neat as any in the city." He was proud of this.
Fred Tiers was a great favorite with the children; they all loved him, calling him affectionately "Daddy Tiers." The teachers were also fond of him for he was always doing something to help and please them. His natural way of living for others was strong in death, for at the death-bed he said to the nurse: "I'm cold. I want a blanket of two. I love you all; good bye.
Fred Tiers was the son of Austin and Margaret Tiers. He was married to Gertrude Adams, who was twice married. He leaves her and the son, Fred Martin. His affiliations were with the Kearny council, J.O.U.A.M. and the Public School Association of Janitors. The funeral services will take place tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, from the Wesley M.E. church of which her was a member. Dr. Dickinson has charge of the services. Theodore Freeman will render several solos.
