William Dill Carr II
(1953 - 2012)
William Dill Carr II was born on March 9, 1953 in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was a natural leader among his numerous cousins. When cousins visited their Carr grandparents in their apartment on Harrison Avenue in Jersey City, Billy led the cousins in escapades thru the building super's maze of tunnels into numerous alleys and streets - city terrain. When he visited the cousins in Fair Haven, NJ he still was able to lead them thru hill and valley - and along the "crick". In 1959 he astonished his military-brat cousins at the grandparent's Thanksgiving dinner table when he intentionally snapped his wine glass in half - he wanted his glass filled immediately without waiting for the adults to be served! The brats were stunned that Billy was allowed to return to the dinner table - albeit, chastened. In 1964 Billy moved to Pittsburgh, PA with his parents William Dill & Mary Meehan Carr and siblings John Mark and Elizabeth Maude. There in high school he was an accomplished athlete who drew high praise from his proud grandfather, Louis Drury Carr, his coaches and numerous college scouts. He earned a scholarship to Edinboro State College where as a rare freshman playing on varsity, his jealous college teammates gave him exceedingly rough treatment that disheartened him to the point that he left and enrolled in Allegheny Community College. He eventually left college altogether. In 1985 he became estranged from his family and went west. Despite numerous efforts to locate him, his whereabouts remained a mystery until the 1980s when he made one brief appearance at his Aunt Alice Stockdale's home in Los Angeles. In 2001 after his sister asked an FBI acquaintance to help locate him, a verbal report indicated that Billy was last known to reside in San Diego. The report added that while his current whereabouts could not be stated for certain, he perhaps was living in Mexico. In 2011 his sister hired a private investigator using her deceased uncle's probate attorney. Said PI never provided a report of his efforts and the family eventually concluded that since the funds to locate Billy were allocated from Billy's share of the estate, neither the probate lawyer nor the lawyer’s PI friend felt obligated to provide results. Sadly, on Saturday morning, July 28, 2012 Billy's sister was advised that he had been found on a San Diego park bench by a dog-walking passerby. A city official reported that Billy was well-known to the department - his police record contained numerous, unspecified arrests that seemingly escaped the PI's ineffective, 18-month search. Billy died of heart disease at the age of 59 years, homeless and likely never knew how much his family and cousins sought, wished and prayed for his safe return. He was buried in the Meehan family plot in Holy Name Cemetery, Jersey City, NJ alongside his mother, Mary Elizabeth Meehan Carr and great grandfather, Hugh Meehan. Attending the funeral were his father William Dill Carr, brother John Mark Carr, sister Elizabeth Maude Lester, cousins Regis John Carr and Sharon Ann Stockdale and her husband Henry Edward Romanoski, uncle William Kenneth Stockdale, and nephews Tommy Ray Carr and William Paul Lester. Father Joe from nearby St. Aloysius performed the ceremony. A wake was held after the funeral at a tavern on West Side Avenue just a few blocks from where his grandparents lived on Harrison Avenue. |

A fire engine was reported on scene (10-97) a minute later and within another minute the police reported code 11-44, meaning that the situation was a possible fatality requiring a coroner on site. At 06:16, police unit 613J1 (likely the coroner) reported it was en route and subsequently arrived at 06:30. The responding emergency units cleared the scene at 07:54. |
