    Notes
    • At the close of the Civil War MR. HOWELL engaged in farming at his Alabama home, and was thus occupied there until the fall of 1872. On December 10, he left his native state and came to Texas, first settled along on the Brazos River in McLennan County and farmed there one year. Next he came to Erath County. On Greens Creek he purchased one hundred acres of land which he farmed. In 1882, he moved into Dublin and was elected justice of the peace and served two years. Then he returned to the farm, where he maintained his residence for eight years, after which he again moved to Dublin to be salesman for the Dublin Co-operative Association of Patrons of Husbandry, a county association which had been organized in October 1883, to do a general mercantile business. In January, 1887, MR. HOWELL was elected president of the company while continuing to farm and accumulating over 200 acres of land. Children of James Love and Matilda Howell: Orpah Jeanette Howell Watson (1868-1939) E. Sparks Howell (1871-1943) Abram Gideon Howell (1873-1936).
