 | Strickland, Ezekiel: 1862 Letter to Abraham Leverett Camp Near Little Rock,
March 5th 1862
Father Leverete
Once more in time I am permitted by the goodness
of Providence to drop you a line. I have not heard a word from
you in a long time. I would be glad to hear from all of you
and the boys of my acquaitance who are now no doubt in the army
of the Confederate States. I assure you that a soldiers life is
a rough one but we are now in it and I say and intend to fight it
or die in the attempt. I heard from Lizzie and our little child
to day they were well. I have allmost give up some time when I
begin to think about them. If I could get home once and a while
I could stand these (shocks) better. When I reflect that I am
away from them and no chance to see them my heart almost breaks
but all man has to stand this now. Lizzie I have no doubt is
allmost grieved to death but she says nothing about it in her
letters to me, but I hear in other sources. She has as much
fortitude as any woman in this world and I write her to bear her
troubles with Christian fortitude for get fears may place us face
to face though war now separates us. Out of my crop last yer she
has fattened and sold (600) Six Hundred lbs of bacon. She has
plenty to spare and thousands to do her. Father makes
arrangements to have her a crop made the present year.
The old man takes as good care of her as if she was his own born
child and Lizzie says has ruined the Babe so that it cries to
follow every time it sees him. It can talk. Oh how I would like
to see it, but enought of this. I hate to have my mind to run in
this channel much less to make this attempt to describe to you my
feelings. I have been |

Mary Wallace was then living in Lewisville, Lafayette County, Arkansas. The letter refers to Ezekiel Strickland having received a letter from his in-laws: Judson, Caroline, Nick and Malitta Leverett. Ezekiel was married to their sister, Mary Elizabeth Leverett.
Caroline was married to Judson Holly;
Nicholas was Nicholas Tompkins Leverett married to Sarah Matilda (Sally) Kennedy;
Malitta was married to J. R. Bradfield. [Malitta's twin sister, Myrtilla was married to Love Howell.] The Gideon mentioned in subsequent letters was their brother, Andrew Gideon Leverett, married to Sarah Louiesa Armstrong. [Line breaks were left as in the original.]

April, 1859.
Nick, M. C. Leverett,
This is Saturday Evening and not much to do and I thought I would
respond to yours of the 27th of February But in the out-set I can and must-say that I
have nothing to excite the resibles of any one. But - shall as I aliways do, do the best I
can, and try to be satisfied. I & Lizzie was indeed glad to hear from you as this is about
the first news since I left there in December Four Months ago. I had come to the
Conclusion that there was something wrong, all dead, married, or had got on the
hifalutin so high that it would be a degradation to _____________________ and long to
ever write us again But four Months or three hundred & Twenty days have
_____________ this trivial exercise into monentity and what do I See a letter from Nick
Caroline Judson & Malitta. Such an occurence will be marked with Scrutiny, besicles
noted to its utmost bearing by Me. Hence keep up the times let not this be the Case
again. I at all times am ready to answer a letter or letters that |

 | Higginbotham: 1858 Bible Family Records The scanned, four pages of family records contains marriages, births and deaths of the following families listed alphabetically: Dozier, Higginbotham, Kennedy, Leverett, Strickland and Vaughn. Judging from the dates, names included, and handwriting, it appears that the Bible belonged originally to Mary Elizabeth (Leverett) and her husband Ezekiel Strickland. It would then have passed to to Emily Dozier (Strickland) and her husband Abraham Taylor Higginbotham.
The cover is for an 1858 American Bible Society (New York) Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and reviewed. None of those pages is includes... |
