Giddens deployed with the 42nd Division to Marseille, France. They arrived there on 8/9 December 1944. The three regiments were formed into Task Force (TF) Linden. The TF entered combat in the vicinity of Strasbourg where it relieved elements of the 36th Infantry Division on 24 December 1944. While his unit was defending a sector along the Rhine, north and south of Strasbourg, TF Linden repulsed a number of enemy counterattacks.
